YouTube Transcript API Alternatives

There are three ways to get YouTube transcripts in code: Google’s official captions endpoint, an open-source library that reads what the YouTube web player reads, or a hosted API that does the fetching for you. Which one fits depends on whose videos you need and where your code runs.

Source review: October 28, 2026. We operate TubeToTranscript, which is one of the hosted options, so this is not an independent ranking. Notes on other options summarize their own documentation, linked below.

How each option works and where it stops
Option and sourceHow it worksMain limit
YouTube Data API v3 (captions.download)Google’s official endpoint. Requires OAuth with the youtube.force-ssl or youtubepartner scope, costs 200 quota units per call, and returns SBV, SCC, SRT, TTML, or VTT.The authorized user must have permission to edit the video; otherwise the call returns 403 forbidden. Suited to your own channel, not arbitrary public videos.
youtube-transcript-api (Python, MIT)Open-source library that needs no API key. Its README says it uses an undocumented part of the API called by the YouTube web client. Includes JSON, text, SRT, and WebVTT formatters and transcript translation. The README warns that YouTube blocks most IPs belonging to cloud providers such as AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure, and recommends rotating residential proxies for servers.
Hosted transcript APIsA provider fetches captions on its own servers and returns them over HTTP with an API key. TubeToTranscript is one; others publish their own pricing and limits. You depend on the provider’s uptime, quotas, and pricing. Check whether it returns existing captions only or also transcribes audio, and how failed requests are billed.

Quotas, prices, and blocking behavior change; confirm them on each source before you build on it. For our own plans, see pricing.

Which one to use

  • Your own channel: the official Data API. It is the only option backed by Google, and editing permission is exactly what you have.
  • Scripts on your own computer, low volume: youtube-transcript-api. It is free and needs no key; residential connections are less likely to be blocked than cloud servers.
  • A server, a scheduled job, or an AI agent: a hosted API, so blocked IPs and proxy rotation are the provider’s problem rather than yours.
  • Videos without any caption track: none of the caption-based options can return text. You need a speech-to-text service, with its own costs and permissions.

TubeToTranscript as a hosted option

The TubeToTranscript API returns a video’s caption track as JSON segments with start times, or as one text string, for watch, youtu.be, Shorts, live, and embed links. You choose a language or a priority list such as de,en. Batch, playlist, and channel endpoints are documented in the API docs.

It returns existing caption tracks only; it does not transcribe audio. A free API key includes 10 trial requests, and Pro is $4.49 a month for 1,500 requests shared between the website and the API. AI agents can use the same API through the remote MCP server at https://www.tubetotranscript.com/mcp, or run the free local server with npx -y tubetotranscript-mcp, which needs no key.

Example request

curl "https://www.tubetotranscript.com/api/v1/transcript?url=https://youtu.be/VIDEO_ID&format=text" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY"

Test before you commit

  1. Pick three public videos: one with creator captions, one with only auto-generated captions, and one with captions turned off.
  2. Request each one from the environment you will deploy to, not just your laptop. Blocking often appears only on server IPs.
  3. Compare the text near the end of a long video, not just the first lines, and check that timestamps match the video.
  4. Check the error for the video without captions. A useful API tells you there is no track instead of returning empty or invented text.
  5. Run a small batch at your expected rate and note quota use, failures, and how failures are billed.

The YouTube Data API has a captions.download method, but it requires OAuth and permission to edit the video. It is designed for channel owners, not for reading captions from any public video.
